Details & Description
English is one of many important languages of the world. Importance of a language does not merely depend on the number of its speakers but on many other factors. In consideration of the number of native speakers also English is second only to Chinese. Almost four hundred million people speak English as their mother tongue or primary language. Importance of English also comes from its acceptance in many countries specifically former British and American colonies as second language, official language. India is the best example. Then comes the point of economic strength and political influence of the countries English speaking speaking people. In this respect, the sole super power of the world now is English speaking. The literature and culture that come out of English also adds to the importance of the language. Finally, English for all such reasons, or convenience have been universally accepted as the lingua franca and the only language for various fields of activities and professions of international nature. English is thus the language of the tourists of inter-country communication of shipping, aviation, hotel etc. All this considerations make English very important to us and its learning necessary. The historical reason is also there. Bangladesh had been under the British rule for two centuries. It has so developed a tradition of bearing English not only for bread and butter but also for prestige and functional purposes. We have been traditionally adopting British educational system. We have developed over the centuries, close social and cultural link and contact with the British. Thus importance of learning English in Bangladesh cannot be overstated. But when we look at the state of English in our country, we are struck by surprise. Very few, in fact a handful of people, really know English. As literacy and education is limited in Bangladesh the condition of English as a foreign language can be easily imagined. English is not again practiced.English has no longer been the medium of higher education in our colleges and universities. English is no longer in use in our offices. Very few books studies and periodicals are published in the country. Attacks on English as foreign language are also not rare. The greatest blow has come from political quarters. It was viewed that learning and practice of English would undermine learning and practice of bangla the mother tongue. So, we must come to realize the reality. We should understand that English can not undermine banglas because our love for bangla is like our love for our mothers. Bangla would always remain in our hearts. Because we are after all social and cultural creatures. In these cases only mother tongue makes appeal to us and gives us identity. A foreign language can never interfere in the domains of a nation's social, cultural and psychological realities. So, if we use English that would be purely for functional and utilitarian purposes. English would remain in the head but never in the heart. What is the harm then? We should again understand that learning foreign languages helps us to develop one's own language. Because exchange, comparison, social and cultural give and take increase the riches of a language and enhance its prestige in the outside world So, learning of English would not only serve our utilitarian purposes but also develop our mother tongue ,our literature and culture. Learning of English would open the door of the store house of knowledge of the world. It will take us closer to the societies, cultures and people of the world and help us knowing them better, knowing each other. In this changing world, learning of English only can keep us up-to-date and enable us to keep abreast of others specially the developed world. In economic consideration also English should be given importance in Bangladesh. If we want to develop our tourism sector, service sectors like aviation, hotel business, shipping, and expand trade and commerce, we have no choice but to learn and use English. The world is becoming smaller and we are moving out and can we survive without English in a foreign land? Can we expect better jobs abroad without learning English better.
